Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has caused great harm to people’s life and health worldwide. Acupuncture and moxibustion, featuring distinct characteristics and unique advantages, is a vital part of TCM and has made important contributions to the anti-epidemic history in China, as recorded in ancient Chinese medical literature that acupuncture and moxibustion can prevent and treat infectious diseases. Multiple guidelines for acupuncture and moxibustion intervention for COVID-19 have been issued by the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, China Association of Chinese Medicine and China Association of Acupuncture-Moxibustion successively, since relevant departments in China have clearly stated that great importance should be attached to TCM application. Studies have found that acupuncture and moxibustion has been widely used in the treatment of various inflammatory diseases. Acupuncture can alleviate the abnormal immune system caused by coronavirus infection by inhibiting “cytokine storm”, thus achieving the effect of treatment and intervention. Exploring the mechanism of acupuncture intervention on COVID-19 can provide theoretical support for clinical prevention and treatment.
